Karachi city is Pakistan’s premier financial and industrial Centre. It is considered as the economic, cultural, philanthropic, political and educational hub of the country. Karachi collects over a third of Pakistan’s tax revenue and generates approximately 20% of Pakistan’s GDP. Approximately 30% of Pakistani industrial output is from Karachi, while Karachi’s ports handle approximately 95% of Pakistan’s foreign trade. Karachi is one of the world’s fastest growing cities, and has communities representing almost every ethnic group in Pakistan. The city experienced rapid economic growth following independence, attracting migrants from throughout Pakistan and South Asia. Karachi is one of Pakistan’s most secular and socially liberal cities. It is also the most linguistically, ethnically, and religiously diverse city in Pakistan. Situated on the Arabian Sea, Karachi serves as a transport hub, and is home to Pakistan’s two largest seaports, the Port of Karachi and Port Bin Qasim, as well as the Pakistan’s busiest airport, Jinnah International Airport.
The city has some important museums that include National Museum of Pakistan and the Mohatta Palace Museum. These museums offer exhibitions regularly. The National Academy of Performing Arts, located in the newly renovated Hindu Gymkhana, the National Arts Council, the All Pakistan Musical Conference and the Kara Film Festival offer some very popular cultural events in the city.

Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan located in southeastern part of the country. The city is an important industrial center and port on the coast of Arabian Sea. It covers an area around 3,527 km² and mostly comprises flat or rolling plains with hills on the western and northern boundaries of the urban sprawl. The two rivers namely River Malir and River Lyari flow through the city. The Karachi harbour is situated on the south-west part of the city. The city has a vast coastline running from Cape Monze in the west to Gharo in the east.
The hills in Karachi are the off-shoots of the Kirthar Range. The highest point of these hills in Karachi is about 528m in the extreme north. All these hills are devoid of vegetation and have wide intervening plains, dry river beds and water channels.
The Port of Karachi is one of South Asia’s largest and busiest deep-water seaports, handling about 60% of the nation’s cargo (25 million tons per annum) located in Karachi, Pakistan. It is located between the Karachi towns of Kiamari and Saddar, close to the main business district and several industrial areas. The geographic position of the port places it in close proximity to major shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
The area around the harbour includes several mangrove forests which are constantly under threat from human activities. To the east of the port lies Chinna Creek, which covers about 6 km² and is dotted with mangrove islands. To the southwest of the port is another much larger mangrove forest in the bay formed by several islands and Manora breakwater; the river Layari flows into this bay, bringing waste from upstream suburbs.
